Which course pharmacists usually take

Most pharmacists and pharmacy assistants take either the CPR course or the full first aid certificate. Both are nationally recognised and issued by CBD College, RTO 91399.

CPR — HLTAID009

1.5 hours. Covers CPR on adults, children and infants, choking, and defibrillator (AED) use. The shortest option, and the one most people refresh most often.

Provide First Aid — HLTAID011

3 hours, and it includes the CPR unit. Adds anaphylaxis and severe allergic reaction, asthma, collapse, chest pain and stroke, bleeding, burns and fractures — the presentations most likely to walk into a pharmacy.

How many CPD credits

Pharmacists need a minimum of 40 CPD credits each CPD period (1 October to 30 September), with at least 20 of those credits coming from Group 2 or Group 3 activities.

Group 1 — information accessed without assessment — 1 credit per hour, capped at 50% of your annual total
Group 2 — knowledge or skills improved with assessment — 2 credits per hour
Group 3 — quality or practice improvement facilitated — 3 credits per hour

Our courses are nationally recognised units of competency, and the online workbook forms part of the same assessed unit as the practical session. The whole course falls under Group 2 — 2 credits per hour, for the online component as well as the time in the room.

Recording it

You record and track your own CPD. Your statement of attainment is the evidence, and it carries everything your record needs:

The unit code and title — e.g. HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
The date you completed the practical session
The issuing RTO and its code — CBD College Pty Ltd, RTO 91399
Your name as recorded against your USI

Because it is nationally recognised, the certificate is accepted anywhere in Australia. The PSA explains how to record CPD on its About CPD page.

How the course runs

There is a short online learning component you complete in your own time, then one hands-on practical session at a location near you. Sessions run weekly across 15 locations Australia-wide, so most people can attend within the week. Your certificate is issued the same day you attend.

Nationally recognised first aid certification is generally treated as current for three years, with an annual CPR refresher. If it has been a while since your last certificate, the CPR course is the quickest way back to current.
